  • Hi,

I'm Slyst, and I'm representing Fandom's Vanguard team. We're users who volunteer to help communities adopt to new technologies and features, like content portability. We've identified the Dishonored Wiki as a high priority for introducing the Portable Infobox tool, which has a lot of benefits for your community. Rather than get into all of the metrics and numbers (though I can present some of those if you're interested), I'll keep it simple. I'd like to reproduce as much as possible the look and feel of your desktop infoboxes in global CSS, and work to update the Infobox templates themselves so that they can be accessible on any current and future platform. Maintaining them if you want to make changes should be very simple.

I've gone ahead and made several drafts that look identical to the existing infoboxes on this wiki. Here's a comparison (not much difference, eh?):

And here's a list of the drafts I've made:

If you're interested in how the other infoboxes look on pages, check out the "Working" column of this neat list.

We can work on modifying these drafts if you're not happy with how they are right now. There are guides and resources on the Portability Hub on how to structure and style these infoboxes that can help you modify them. I've placed all required CSS here and imported it. Everything should work properly as set up, so if you're comfortable with the changes, you can approve them straight away with just a single click.

If you have any questions regarding the migration or if this is not the right place to hold discussions like these, please do let me know. Thanks! :)

    Best regards, Slyst

    • As mentioned before, your community is a high priority. Working with you on this project would be helpful. I've not heard from you, and I have produced drafts for all of your infoboxes. You can make suggestions or approvals at any point in the process or discuss with me your concerns. The work I produced should function exactly the same as it does now, and should look mostly or totally identical. Now that I've completed the work, you can test it out for yourself. Please expect that Vanguard will directly approve these drafts on or after January 1, 2017 unless we hear your objections. Thank you for your consideration, and I hope we can produce a result that works for everyone.

    • Not Geist here, but a fellow admin.

I personally don't use the mobile version nor do I care about it. What I do care about though is that the desktop version will not be visibly hampered or its quality lowered in favor of making it portable.

That picture example you showed looks fine to me. For those drafts I frankly don't even understand what I am supposed to see there, as I am not very familiar with CSS stuff.

Long story short, as long as the desktop version will not suffer from it, feel free to make changes as you see fit.

    • I appreciate the efforts your team has done, and wish to thank you for contacting us.

Along with Piko, I try to avoid using the mobile version whenever possible, preferring either my laptop when needed, or my desktop (most preferred). The issues I DO have with Mobile versions have nothing to do with the infoBoxes but that is for a different time.

I do wish to express some questions about this though. Again, as Piko stated, the current formats you have look fine. I truly see no problem with them as far as I can tell. However, I do have some worries about future incarnations of Infoboxes.

We have, as you no doubt have noticed, a diverse and highly involved set of editors here at our community. There are constant discussions, facts, rewrites, and improvements made on the articles by these very talented people.

My main question is this: If, in the future, our community settles upon an agreement to change the current look or formatting of InfoBox templates, will we be able to do so of our own accord? Or do we need to tell the Vanguard Team about the improvements we want?

My second question is in conjunction with the first: Once these changes are implemented by your team, is our community allowed to make changes to the Infobox templates at all?

As I said previously, I appreciate your team's efforts, but I'm merely trying to gauge what our community's options are here.

      - Geist

    • That's great to hear, thanks!

I'll be happy to answer your queries.

As an extension of one of our core tenets, we do not want to leave you in a situation where you are dependent on the help of Vanguard. In the future, 30 days post final implementation, Vanguard is no longer responsible for your community's infoboxes. However, your community should be able to make all sorts of changes to the look and formatting of your infoboxes yourself using CSS. As I initially mentioned, there are resources on the Portability Hub to assist you with this.

Yes, absolutely. These infoboxes belong to your community and you are free to edit them however you feel like - this includes all aspects, be it parameters, formatting or styling.

To approve the present drafts, you simply need to click the "Approve this draft" button at the top of the right rail for each draft. This would replace the current templates with the drafts, which will be simultaneously deleted. Of course, you don't need to do this unless you're fully sure of the conversion. So please, let me know if you have any questions in mind. Thanks! :)

    • Hi,

Since it has been over a week since the allotted deadline and that you don't seem to have any objections, I will be approving all the drafts by tomorrow. Please let me know if you have any additional queries. Thanks.

    • Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't realize I had to approve each one individually (despite the fact you indicated it in your message). My apologies. I somehow thought they automatically happened.

Thank you for your patience with us and me in particular.

    • It's quite alright. I've gone ahead and approved all the drafts. Please let me know if something is out of place after this migration.

Thank you for your time! :)

    • I have no clue how these things work, but I can tell you that they've currently stopped the achievements pages from displaying properly, as all the images are back to the smaller size (which, to be fair, they were before this started, and have been changed since). Geist, if you could have a look at this and change it, that would be great. Thanks.

    • As far as I can tell, this is caused by the infobox's theme, which sets an image to a certain width by default.

I don't think I can edit the theme, but presumably admins would be able to. Another option would be to give the infobox a different theme, but I don't know what the results of that will be.

EDIT: Piko and I fixed this issue. There's still a problem with the character infobox causing particularly tall images to scale badly and become blurry.
