Sleep darts are a non-lethal type of ammunition, which Corvo Attano and Emily Kaldwin can use with the crossbow and Daud with his wristbow.
The darts are filled with a plant-based chemical that causes unaware targets to fall unconscious instantly when shot. However, in battle the effects of the drug are delayed by a few seconds, unless the protagonist purchases an upgrade that makes the drug's effect instantaneous in combat. In Dishonored 2, all enemies take a while to fall unconscious without the upgrade.
Regardless of how many times a target is hit by sleep darts, they will never be killed. However, caution should be observed when attempting nonlethal action; when unconscious, enemies are highly susceptible to fall damage and may be killed if they are not on a safe, flat surface. Finally, unconscious individuals run the risk of being eaten by rat swarms or attacked by bloodflies if they are too close.
In Dishonored, Corvo can carry ten sleep darts. In The Knife of Dunwall and The Brigmore Witches, Daud can carry ten at first, but can upgrade this to fifteen. In Dishonored 2, the protagonist can only carry five.
