Rats are spreading the Rat Plague to the inhabitants of the city of Dunwall.
They can be encountered throughout the world, both in packs and alone. They are aggressive in packs, but cowardly otherwise. Rats avoid light.
A swarm of rats, staying away from the light
Corvo has several supernatural abilities which allow him to take advantage of rats. He is able to possess them and use them to scare guards, squeeze through tight spaces, and make quick getaways. He will die if he is stepped on while he possesses a rat. He can also summon swarms of rats that will attack enemies, disposing of them "in an especially grisly manner". Summoned rats are also able to be possessed.
Rats will attack Corvo if he is injured.
