"He seeks to weed out the witches and heretics. Those who have succumbed to the lure of the Void and who bring chaos where they tread."
—The Heart[1]

Liam Byrne is an acting member of the Abbey of the Everyman. He serves as the Vice Overseer of Karnaca in the year 1852.

Biography

Byrne was born in Fraeport to a lowly family.[2] He was taught to read by his father, who carved letters into hand-made wooden blocks,[3] while his mother encouraged his musical skill.[4] One day, he encountered an Overseer with a wolfhound, and was transfixed by the strictures the Overseer was reciting.[5] The Overseers kept an eye on him for months before taking him away for the Trials of Aptitude.[6]

By 1852, together with his Overseers, he fights the criminal organization known as the Howlers, as their leader Paolo is rumored to own a black-magic artifact – which is considered heresy by the Abbey.[7][8]

In addition to his feud with the Howlers, Byrne has also become suspicious of the Royal Conservatory's curator Breanna Ashworth, connecting her to the recent prophecies of the Sisters of the Oracular Order. As voicing this opinion publicly could get Byrne accused of heresy, he has sent Overseer Ogburn to keep an eye on Ashworth from an outpost near the Conservatory.[9][10]

During the mission The Dust District, Byrne is a potential ally and can help either Corvo Attano or Emily Kaldwin to solve the Jindosh Riddle in order to enter Aramis Stilton's mansion. However, the body of Byrne's archenemy, Paolo, must be delivered to him first. Alternatively, Liam can also be delivered to Paolo or both men can be ignored completely. If both are knocked out, they can be shut in crates and be exchanged for two prisoners, forcing them to work in the mines for five years.

Depending on the protagonist's choices, Byrne can become a member of the new Duke's grand council if he is spared at the Dust District.

Trivia

  • Liam Byrne is voiced by Jamie Hector.[11]
  • If both Byrne and Paolo are left alone, in the low chaos ending, the two can be seen working together along with the Duke's body double Armando.
  • If the protagonist stands directly in front of Byrne for an extended amount of time, he will punch them.
  • It is revealed by the Heart that Byrne is the youngest man to achieve the title of Vice Overseer in decades.[12]
  • Duke Luca Abele personally exiled Byrne from the Grand Palace in his attempt to remove the Abbey from Serkonos. Because of this, Byrne dislikes the Duke.[13]
  • Byrne correctly believes Paolo to be in the possession of "some unclean artifact" that allows him to resurrect once per day.
  • Byrne is very ambitious, with the Heart stating that he might become High Overseer one day.[14]
    • While it is unknown if this is in fact Byrne's intention, he does intend to move to Dunwall when he is finished in Karnaca, there to have the ear of the High Overseer.[15]
  • Despite his duties in the Dust District, he still takes the time to, once a week, meet up with an old friend of his mother's at a café on the edge of Karnaca.[16]
